How to Customize Your Blog Header in WordPress

By on October 23rd, 2015

The header is usually the first thing that people will see when they visit your WordPress blog or website. Being one of the most important visual elements of your website, the header should be carefully chosen to suit your niche while also being consistent with the style and theme of your website. WordPress recommends that you choose a header image of 1260×240 pixels, although you can choose any image and crop it if required. This guide explains how to upload and customize your header images in just a few minutes.

  1. In your WordPress administrator dashboard, navigate to Appearance > Header. At the top of this page, you will see a preview of how the header currently looks with your chosen settings.
  2. Click "Choose File" and browse to the location of the image you want to use for your header. Click "Upload" and crop it by moving the selection box over the part of the image you want to use as a header. This will only be necessary if the image is not already the exact size you want to use. Alternatively, you can choose an image from your WordPress media library by clicking "Choose Image".
  3. Ensure that the box beside "Show header text with your image" is selected if you want to display the title of your blog on the header.
  4. To change the header text, navigate to Settings > General and enter a new title for your website.
  5. To change the font, colour, size or position of the header text, you can do so by editing the style.css file for your chosen theme. You can modify this file from within the WordPress platform itself by navigating to Appearance > Editor and opening the style.css file at the bottom of the column to the right. The style.css file varies depending on the chosen theme, but you should be able to find the required settings under a section entitled "Header" or something similar.

Some WordPress themes provide additional header customization options. For example, the popular Genesis Lifestyle theme provides a header widget which provides you with a great deal more personalization potential without having to get involved in any coding. Alternatively, to add extra elements to your header, such as Google AdSense code, you can do so by editing the header.php file which is accessible from the Appearance > Editor section of the WordPress administrator dashboard. To insert any additional feature on your header, add the required code, such as your AdSense code, below the "id= header" tag
